Appreciation post: my neighbor in Tulsa said my sanding was "polishing a turd" and it fixed my whole cabinet door gap
I spent three weekends on six cabinet doors and could not get the gaps to line up. My neighbor Carl, who has been woodworking since the 80s, walked by my open garage and watched me sand for maybe 30 seconds. He said, "You're polishing a turd, buddy. That door's not square, so no amount of sanding will shut it flush." At first I got a little annoyed. But he was right. I put a framing square on the door and it was off by almost a quarter inch on one side. I had been sanding the edge for hours when the real issue was the frame itself. He helped me shim the hinge side and tighten up the carcass with a few pocket screws. Two hours later all six doors closed with a nice even gap. So what's your go-to move when a door just won't sit right, shim the hinge or rebuild the frame?
A quarter inch is a lot, but I'd check the opening itself before rebuilding anything, the cabinet box can rack out of square just like the door can. Carl's pocket screw fix on the carcass was probably the real win there, not the hinge shim.
