I bought a 4 pack of those 90 degree corner clamps for a shelving build last month, and 3 of the 4 strips spun on the screw and let my miter joints open up about 1/16 inch. I lost $85 plus a whole weekend re gluing and sanding, and now I can't decide if I should drill and pin every corner or go back to just clamping and praying. Did you guys eat the cost on a bad clamp set too, or do you pin your joints no matter what?
Man, $85 on clamps that spin out? I'd be annoyed too, but pinning every joint over one bad set seems like a lot. Were they the cheap Harbor Freight kind or something halfway decent? Because a 1/16 inch gap sounds more like the clamps weren't tight enough or the wood moved, not that pinning is suddenly required for every shelf. Plenty of people glue and clamp shelves with no pins and they hold fine for years. Sounds like you got a bad batch, not that your whole method is broken.
