Found out the hard way why you back-butter tile after 3 blown jobs

I spent a whole Saturday redoing my bathroom backsplash in Columbus because the thin-set didn't grab the porcelain edges, so I asked a tile guy at the store and he showed me the back-butter trick in 2 minutes, has anyone else made this mistake with large format tiles?
