My moisture reading hit 28% on a 2x4 and I almost burned the house down

Was building a deck frame last Saturday and decided to check the lumber with my $40 pin meter. Every single board from the pile was above 20% moisture, one hit 28%. Had a guy at the lumberyard tell me they just unloaded that stack that morning. Who else checks lumber before nailing it up?

That 28% board would’ve been a campfire starter if you nailed it up. I had a stud once hit 30% on a deck I was building and it actually warped after three days in the sun. I check every single board now with my meter before I even unstrap the bundle. @carter.thea has the right idea sending that wet lumber back. Honestly the lumberyard guys probably think I’m crazy, but I’d rather be crazy than have a deck twist apart next summer.

That 28% board would've been going back to the yard.
