My neighbor's 2x4 trick saved me $80 on shelf brackets

Old guy named Pete two doors down saw me struggling with a wobbly garage shelf last spring. He came over, grabbed a scrap 2x4, and showed me how to cut it at an angle to use as a diagonal brace. Ten minutes of work, zero brackets needed. I had been about to order a kit online. It's been 14 months and that shelf still hasn't budged. You ever get a tip that made you rethink all the hardware you bought before?

Did you ever check if the shelf was actually square before it started wobbling? In my experience, a diagonal brace fixes a lot, but sometimes those brackets are holding up a bad install, not the weight. The wood might be doing the heavy lifting, but the real lesson is learning to cut and fit stuff yourself, which is worth way more than $80.
