My uncle said my deck wasn't up to code. He was right and I'm glad he told me.

Sometimes family showing you your mistakes is the best thing that can happen. That's way better than your deck collapsing during a barbecue and taking out the grill and your dignity at the same time. Uncle probably saved you from having to explain to your insurance why your hot dog stand ended up in the neighbor's yard. Plus now you get to bond over building it right, which beats the alternative of him just shaking his head at the wreckage. Good on him for being honest and good on you for listening.
