Question about the pencil mark trick that saved my cabinet doors

I was hanging new cabinet doors last weekend and kept messing up the hinge holes until a guy at the hardware store told me to rub pencil lead around the hinge plate. It left a perfect outline on the door so I could drill dead center every time, and I got all 8 doors done in under an hour. Anyone else have little marking tricks like that?
