Wasted $150 on a fancy smart thermostat that fought my old HVAC system

Honestly, my 20-year-old furnace just couldn't talk to this Nest thing I bought last spring. It kept cycling on and off like crazy and I lost two weekends troubleshooting it before I just went back to the basic dial model for $30. Anyone else have a fancy upgrade backfire on older equipment?

Yeah so you basically tried to pair a smartphone with a flip phone. Did you check if your old system was even compatible first or just assume the Nest would figure it out? Most of those smart thermostats need a common wire that older furnaces don't have.

Wait, you're telling me they just went in blind without even checking if their furnace had a common wire? That's wild, honestly. I've seen people fry their whole system messing with Nest installs on old setups. I had a buddy try to wire one into a 1980s boiler and it threw a code so bad the thermostat just blinked red at him like a mean robot. I mean, I get wanting to be all modern and fancy, but come on, a little homework saves a lot of headaches. Your mileage may vary, but I'd never touch a smart thermostat without pulling up the manual first. Guess some lessons are learned the hard way, huh?
