3 years late realizing my garage lights were wired to the wrong breaker

Last week I finally swapped out my old fluorescent shop lights for LEDs and went to kill the circuit. Flipped the breaker labeled 'garage' and nothing happened. Tried the one labeled 'bathroom' and boom, everything shut off. Turns out the guy who owned this house before me, back in 2019, ran a bunch of outlets and lights off the bathroom circuit to save time. Nobody caught it because we never actually tested every single thing until now. I spent 3 years just assuming the labels were right, never questioning it. That's how you get a shocking surprise when you're up at 2am on a ladder. Has anyone else found mislabeled breakers in an older house and how did you map them all out without losing your mind?

My dad had the exact same problem in the house I grew up in, a 1960s ranch in Ohio. He finally bought a $15 outlet tester and a small lamp, then spent a whole Saturday flipping breakers while I yelled down to him from each room. We found three lights and four outlets that were tied to the wrong circuits, plus one breaker that controlled two totally different rooms. The worst part is we never rewired it, we just made a new chart and taped it inside the panel door, because pulling new wire would have meant cutting into plaster walls. It took us about four hours total, but I marked every single outlet and switch with a tiny dot of colored nail polish matching the breaker number, so now even my kids know what goes where. Honestly, I think half the houses in America have this issue, it just never comes up until you really need to flip the right switch.
