Found a hack for keeping my drill bits from walking on metal surfaces

I was drilling into a steel bracket last night around 1am and my bit kept sliding all over the place, so I tried putting a strip of masking tape on the spot first and it worked like magic. The tape gave the bit enough grip to start clean without needing a center punch every time. Has anyone else found a weird trick like this that actually makes late night projects go smoother?

My last late night drilling adventure ended with me punching a hole in my garage ceiling instead of the steel plate I was aiming for. The tape trick would have saved me some drywall repair and my dignity, but I guess that's what I get for trying to work with power tools after midnight. Might actually try this next time I'm too stubborn to grab a center punch.

Hold up, you punched a hole in your ceiling instead of the plate? That's wild. I mean, I've had drills slip and skate around on me plenty of times, but I've never managed to send one flying up like that. Were you using one of those big hammer drills or something? That takes a special kind of focus, or lack thereof, at 2am. At least the tape trick probably would have kept the bit right where you wanted it, stuck to the steel. Glad you made it out without a trip to the ER, that's the real win here.
