Got yelled at by my neighbor for using a circular saw at 11 PM

I was out on my back porch in Austin last night trying to finish cutting some old fence boards for a raised planter bed. It was already 11 and I knew I was pushing it, but the project was almost done and I couldn't sleep anyway. My neighbor two doors down comes storming over in his bathrobe screaming about how he has to be up at 5 for work. So now I'm stuck with half-cut wood and a rule for myself: after 10 PM, it's strictly hand tools and glue work from now on. Anybody else got a hard cutoff time for power tools at night?

Hand tools and glue work after 10 PM is the EXACT same rule I adopted after my neighbor pounded on my door at 11:15 while I was sanding some planks for a bookshelf. The worst part is you get so focused on finishing one last cut that you completely lose track of time. Now I keep a kit of sharp chisels and a good handsaw on hand for those late night woodworking emergencies.

Oh man, that sanding story hits close to home. I've done the exact same thing with a router bit, thinking "just one more pass" and suddenly it's midnight. You're right about how easy it is to lose track of time when you're in that zone with a project. Keeping a quiet hand tools kit for late nights is such a smart idea, I might have to steal that. I usually just give up and read woodworking forums instead, but that never gets anything built.
