Guy at the hardware store gave me a tip about sanding edges

I was grabbing some 80 grit at the local Ace last night, and this older contractor said he always uses a hard block instead of just the paper on palm sanders. He mentioned the paper wraps around and rounds off corners without you noticing. Tried it on a shelf I'm finishing, and he was right... the edges stayed crisp. Anyone else ditch the sander for corners?

80 grit eats corners fast even with a block.

Does anyone find that going up a grit size and using a lighter touch actually saves time overall, @rowanbennett? Seems counterintuitive but I've had way less sanding to fix rounded edges after.
