I finally quit sanding between coats after a guy at the Rockler in Denver called my finish 'muddy'
He said I was sanding too fine too early and just pushing pigment around instead of building up thin layers, so now I stop at 220 between coats and only wet sand the final one. My last walnut shelf came out way clearer with about half the sanding pads. Anyone else had someone trash their finishing routine and end up thanking them for it?
Switching to 220 does something else too, it leaves a little tooth for the next coat to grab onto instead of sitting on a slick surface. I learned that the hard way on maple, where over sanding made the finish flake off in sheets a year later. Good finishes are built on grip, not polish.
