That $150 smart thermostat was a total waste for my shop

I grabbed one of those wifi thermostats for my garage workshop back in February, thinking I could preheat the space from bed and save time. Turns out the app kept dropping connection to the heater relay, so I'd wake up to a 38 degree room anyway. After a week of fighting it, I yanked it off the wall and put my old mechanical one back on. The smart unit is now sitting in a drawer because I'm too stubborn to return it. What really got me is that the basic timer switch I had before did the SAME job for $20. Has anyone else gotten burned by "smart" upgrades that just add extra steps to a simple task? I'd love to hear what cheap dumb tool you went back to.

Did you see that Consumer Reports piece where most smart thermostats fail basic reliability tests? Sounds like you paid $150 to be a beta tester for their app.
