The night I realized my stud finder was lying to me for 2 years

I was hanging a shelf in our laundry room around 2 AM and kept getting a false positive on a spot that sounded hollow when I knocked. Turned out my stud finder was in metal-scan mode from when I used it on the ceiling, and the settings light was just too dim to notice. Anyone else ever get tricked by a mode switch on a tool that cost more than the project it was for?
