Pro tip: heat gun distance is a real thing or is it just hype?

So I've been screen printing for about a year now, mostly one color stuff on t-shirts. I always heard you gotta keep the heat gun exactly 6 inches away or your emulsion gets wrecked. But last week I got lazy and held it like 3 inches for a few seconds on a test screen and literally nothing bad happened. Now I'm wondering if all that 'perfect distance' talk is just gatekeeping from old timers. Has anyone else tested this and found the sweet spot is way wider than people say?
