Rant: I spent $65 on a fancy scoop coater and my $8 one worked better
Bought a metal scoop coater from an online supply place last month for $65 because a video said the cheap plastic ones give uneven coats. Used it on 4 screens with my usual 156 mesh and got the worst drips and streaks I have ever seen, plus it scratched one mesh. Dug out my old $8 plastic one from the garage and got a clean, even coat on the first pull. Wanted to toss the metal one in the trash but I am going to try sanding the edges first to see if that helps. Anyone here actually had luck with a metal coater, or should I just go back to the cheap one and call it a day?
Man, I feel this in my soul. I dropped $55 on an aluminum coater after watching the same kind of video and had the exact same mess, drips running down the screen and a gouge in one of my 160 meshes. Turns out the edge had a tiny burr on one side and the blade was way too sharp of an angle for how thin my emulsion is. I sanded mine down with 400 grit and it got a lot better, but honestly my $10 plastic one from the craft store still beats it on most days.
