6 months with a cheap lathe and my first cut vs my latest cut look like two different machines
I picked up one of those $300 Chinese record lathes back in March just to see if I could even make a groove. My first few cuts were garbage, all warble and no high end. Took me about 4 months of messing with stylus angle and tracking force before I got a clean sound. Last week I cut a 7" single of my friend's punk band and it actually sounded decent through my home setup. Has anyone else put in that long of a learning curve before getting acceptable results?

Oh wow, that really brings back memories. I had a similar struggle with a cheap press from the same place a few years ago. What nobody tells you is that the factory stylus they ship with is basically a paperweight. Swapping it out for a proper sapphire one from a reputable supplier made more difference than any amount of tweaking I did on the arm weight. You might want to check if yours came with the same junk.
