My first lathe cut skipped across half of side A and I saved it with a coin and some dumb luck
So I've been messing around with a little record lathe in my garage here in Akron for maybe 3 months now. Last Saturday I was cutting a test dub of a mixtape for my buddy's birthday, and about 40 seconds into side A the chip clear got clogged and the stylus started hopping. Sounded like a zipper opening. I panicked and lifted the head way too fast and gouged a line right through two songs.
Here's the dumb part. I didn't have a spare stylus and the shop was closed. My neighbor Ray, who does woodworking, came over and told me to check the embossing depth because my spring was riding too light. I ended up shimming the head with a nickel under the mount (I know, I know) and recut just that segment on a fresh blank. Came out clean enough that my buddy couldn't even tell which take was which.
Anyway I've now ordered two spare styli and a proper depth gauge, but I'm curious, what do you all keep on hand for chip clear clogs mid-cut? I feel like I got lucky and I don't want to rely on a coin again.
