My homemade record lathe sucked until I stopped cutting at 78 RPM
I spent 4 months cutting records on a homemade lathe in my garage in Omaha and they all sounded like garbage. Turns out I had the motor set way too fast, like 78 RPM fast, because I thought faster meant cleaner grooves. Last month I switched to 33 and a half and used a $9 stethoscope from a drugstore to listen while cutting, and the difference is night and day. Anyone else ever mess up their speed calibration this badly?
Man, four months of that has gotta sting. I did the same dumb thing with a belt sander once, thought spinning it faster would polish better and just burned everything. The stethoscope trick is smart though, never would've thought of that.
