Pro tip: a guy at the Raleigh record fair said my test press sounded "like a pizza box," and he was right
Last weekend I brought my first home-cut test press to a small record fair in Raleigh and handed it to a guy who's been pressing for years. He played about 10 seconds of it, looked up, and said it sounded "like a pizza box," then pointed at my cutting depth and my dull stylus. I'd been cutting way too deep on the cheap needle and the high end was getting eaten alive. Swapped to a fresh stylus and backed off the depth, and the same track suddenly had room to breathe. What's your go-to trick for checking groove depth without a microscope?
