Ran into a guy at a record swap who showed me his homemade lacquer cutter
He was using an old turntable motor and a heated stylus rig he built from scratch, and it actually cut a decent groove into a blank disc right there at the table. Has anyone else tried building their own cutting lathe from salvaged parts, or am I the only one who thinks that's insane but impressive?

Three attempts and I still set my soldering iron on fire trying that.

Dude that thing sounds wild, I love seeing people hack together weird audio gear like that. There's a whole rabbit hole on the Lathe Trolls forum where guys are making these from old turntable parts and even using hot glue and toothpicks for the suspension. Some of them get pretty wild with the heat control too like soldering a small variable resistor onto the stylus heater to stop it from burning the disc. Honestly that kind of DIY spirit is way cooler than dropping thousands on some vintage Scully lathe that needs a full restoration anyway.
