Tried cutting at 33 RPM and 45 RPM on the same lacquer, and the difference sold me
I cut the same song twice on two blanks last weekend in my garage, once at 33 and once at 45, and the 45 had noticeably more low end and cleaner highs on my test pressing. The catch is you only get about 12 minutes per side at 45, so my 6 song EP would need two discs instead of one. Has anyone here just accepted the longer runtime at 33, or do you split the release to get the better sound?
Picture spending all that time cutting two blanks and then telling your friends hey my EP is now two records and costs twelve more bucks. I mean sure the 45 sounds better, that's just physics, wider grooves means more room for the bass to breathe. But are we really kidding ourselves that most people's setups at home will even show that difference, or is this one of those things you only hear on your own nice rig in the garage. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather press it at 33 and keep it one disc unless the songs are short enough to fit easy at 45 anyway. Splitting a six song EP over two discs feels like a lot of hassle and cash for a jump most ears won't catch.
