My dollar store frames looked way better after one cheap swap

I redid my whole gallery wall last month using those $1.25 black frames, but they all looked flat and cheap until I put white mats inside made from dollar store poster board. Took about 20 minutes with a box cutter and a ruler, and now the photos pop like I spent 10x more. Has anyone else tried cutting their own mats instead of buying the pre-made ones?

Tried mounting mine on cardboard once, ended up with a wavy mess and red fingers.
