Tried Mod Podge vs dollar store glue on a decoupage project and the difference was huge

Used the $1.25 bottle of Elmer's glue mixed with water on a tray from Dollar Tree and it bubbled up bad, but the Mod Podge I got at Joann's for $8 was way smoother - has anyone found a dollar store hack that works as good as the real thing?

Eight dollars for Mod Podge seems like a lot for a craft project though. I've used the Elmer's glue and water mix on a few picture frames and it was fine if you brush it on thin and let it dry flat. Maybe you just put too much on or it was a humid day.

Hold on @rowanbennett, Mod Podge is actually a sealer, not just glue, so it's a different finish.
