Heard a CAD manager say something about layer standards that stuck with me

Was at a lunch spot near our office in Denver last Tuesday and overheard a guy from another firm telling his coworker that he spends more time fixing layer names on imported files than he does drafting the actual project. Said something like "if people just followed NCS, I'd get home an hour earlier every day." Made me think about how much time I waste on the same thing. Do you guys enforce strict layer naming with your team or just let it slide? I'm debating whether to push for a standard on our next job.

Listen, I saw a guy at my local Home Depot in Phoenix last month arguing with a contractor about layer colors for fifteen minutes in the lighting aisle. Fifteen minutes. The contractor was holding a case of recessed cans and looked like he wanted to throw them at the guy. I get that standards can save time, but are we really losing an hour a day to this? I've worked on plenty of jobs where the CAD files were a complete mess of layer names and somehow we still got the building built. Unless you're working on a massive project with 50 people, I feel like you spend more time policing the standard than you actually save. Half the time people just turn everything to layer 0 and override the colors anyway, at least in my experience.

My old boss once color coded everything by layer and nobody could find anything.
