Old drafter told me to always dimension from the same datum point, but my boss says that wastes time on simple parts
Who do you side with when the job calls for speed, the guy who says consistent datums prevent a 3/16 mismatch 6 months later or the guy who wants the drawing out by lunch.

That "caught a 1/8 inch error" line really made me rethink the whole speed thing.

Two years ago I used consistent datums and caught a 1/8 inch error before it hit the floor.
