Sketch layer names finally clicked after a messy shop drawing mishap

I always thought keeping layer names short like "SHT-FP1" was fine until a contractor called me about a mismatch on a job in Boise last spring. Switched to descriptive names like "FloorPlan_FirstFloor_Struct" and it cut my redraw time by maybe 30 percent. Anyone else find a naming system that sticks or do you just rely on your own memory?

Man, that hits home way harder than it should. It’s the same deal with naming files on my computer, I used to slap dates and initials on everything, then six months later I’m opening thirty random PDFs just to find one drawing. Once you get burned by something that seemed obvious at the time, you start realizing the short cut is rarely the actual shortcut. The real trick is naming stuff like someone else has to pick it up cold, even if it’s just future you. That 30 percent you got back is basically the cost of not trusting your own memory, and honestly that’s a life lesson more than a CAD rule.
