Been there, it's the worst. I started asking for a quick sign off on the detail level before I dive in. It saves a ton of time and sets clear expectations.

My friend spent a whole week building this crazy detailed dashboard. Her boss took one look and said he just wanted three numbers in an email. She was crushed.
