Can we talk about spending $600 on a hydraulic cutter vs just renting one for that big job near Seattle?

I dropped $600 on a name brand hydraulic cutter for a 3 week pipeline job in Everett and it paid for itself in time saved, but my buddy swears by renting for heavy jobs since you avoid maintenance costs - has anyone else done the math both ways and found a clear winner?

Rent it unless you know you'll use it again inside a year.

Yeah exactly. Most people don't think about the hidden costs of buying either. You pay taxes, registration, and then it sits in your garage losing value every single day. Plus if you break it or the engine seizes up you're stuck with a paperweight. With a rental you just drop it off and walk away. No hassle no storage no maintenance. Really only makes sense if you're using it constantly like every weekend for months straight. Otherwise you're just burning cash for no good reason.
