The main pump bearing on our 12-inch cutterhead went out with a bang last Thursday

We were pulling material from a channel near Mobile, Alabama, and the whole rig just shuddered. A loud pop, then a nasty grinding noise. Shut it down fast, but the damage was done. The bearing cage had completely failed, and the seal was shot, letting river water into the lube. My boss wanted to try a field repair with a puller and a new bearing kit, but I argued we needed to pull the whole pump assembly and check the shaft for scoring. It's a two-day job minimum versus a maybe-fix that could blow again in an hour. We ended up pulling it, and sure enough, the shaft had a bad groove. What's your call in a spot like that? Patch it quick or take the time to do it right?

A loud pop from a 12-inch cutterhead sounds absolutely terrifying.

My crew had a 10-inch pump eat a bearing on a dredge job near Baton Rouge last year, and that pop followed by grinding is a sound I still hear in my sleep. We tried the quick patch route with a puller and new bearing, but the shaft had a hairline groove we missed, and it seized again within four hours, costing us a full weekend. You absolutely made the right call pulling the whole assembly, because a few extra hours of work beats explaining to your boss why you have to shut down again the same day.

Been there, that grinding sound is the worst.
