Dropped $60 on a Ridgid drywall screw gun and it burned out on my second ceiling job

The motor literally smoked halfway through hanging 12 sheets in a basement remodel, so has anyone else had better luck with the Makita or is it just bad luck with these budget models?

Burns out halfway through 12 sheets. That's brutal. Sounds like Ridgid decided to save on copper and just used hopes and prayers for the windings. Makita's been solid for me but honestly you might just have cursed luck with drywall guns. They're basically all made for speed, not longevity anymore.

Is it possible the drywall compound these days is actually harder on tools than it used to be? I've noticed the new lightweight muds seem to gum up and dry out faster, which puts way more strain on the motor. Might be worth checking if switching brands of compound buys you an extra job or two per gun.
