I finally tried the butt joint trick my old lead man showed me in Boise

He kept saying to prefill the gap with setting compound before taping, and I blew him off for 2 years. Did it on a ceiling patch in Meridian yesterday and the joint sanded out flat with zero picture framing, so what other old school tips am I sleeping on?
