Saw a weird drywall patch in a 1920s house in Cincinnati

I was helping a friend check out a place he's thinking of buying, and in one of the upstairs bedrooms there was this patch that looked like it was done with actual wood lath and horsehair plaster, not modern board. The homeowner said it was original, but it was way smoother than the surrounding wall. Has anyone ever had to match a repair to that kind of old plaster work? What's the best method to blend it so it doesn't look like a shiny new spot?

That wet sanding trick @the_spencer mentioned is key because modern patches always cure too smooth. You have to rough up the finish to mimic the old texture, or it looks like a sore thumb. It's the same with any repair, trying to match old character with new materials never looks right.

My buddy hired a guy who sands with a wet sponge.
