Tried 5/8 vs 1/2 inch on a ceiling job and it was night and day
Did a rec room ceiling in a house near Cleveland last week. Owner wanted 1/2 inch to save money. Sag city after two days. Had to rip it all down and put up 5/8. The extra weight made it sit flat against the joists. No bowing at all now. Anyone else refuse to use 1/2 on ceilings anymore?

Wait, you actually saw it sag after just two days with 1/2 inch? That's crazy, I've seen it bow over time but never that fast. Must have been some seriously wide joist spacing or something.

24 inches on center with ceiling drywall already up, it was like watching a slow motion belly flop. Not trying to argue but I've seen 1/2 inch fail fast in those conditions more than once.
