Tried those fancy fiberglass mesh tapes for 3 months then switched back to paper tape. Night and day difference.

I was on this big job in Denver last summer and the GC kept pushing the mesh tape saying it was faster. So i gave it a real shot for about 3 months on like 20 different rooms. At first it seemed great cause it stuck easy and didnt bubble. But man the cracking started showing up after a few weeks especially on the butt joints. Switched back to paper tape last month on a basement finish and I remember why I loved it. The paper actually bonds into the mud instead of just sitting on top. Plus when I had to fix a corner bead that got bumped it didnt rip the whole tape off. Anyone else find paper holds up way better on ceiling repairs or am I just doing the mesh wrong?

Paper tape is basically like rebar for drywall. The mesh is just sitting there hoping the mud holds it together.

Notices how the simple solution always outlasts the fancy one in almost any trade.
