Warranty callbacks doubled after I switched to butt joints without backer blocks
For 7 years I always boarded ceilings with backer blocks behind every butt joint. Then last spring a big commercial job in Reno pushed us to save time, so I skipped them. Within 4 months we got 3 callbacks for cracked seams, each one costing us about $400 in labor and material. Now I'm back to cutting 1x6 strips and screwing them behind every single butt joint, no exceptions. It adds maybe 20 minutes per room but saves us from those weekend repair trips that eat your whole profit. Anyone else ever try to shortcut this and regret it, or do you glue them instead of screwing?
