My kitchen sink in Reno was draining so slow that doing dishes took 20 minutes instead of 5, and I was about to drop $150 on a plumber. I grabbed a $4 plastic drain snake from the Dollar Tree, pulled out a hair ball the size of a golf ball in about 30 seconds, and the sink drains perfect now. But my neighbor who does plumbing on the side says those cheap snakes can push gunk farther down and cause a bigger clog later, and that I should have just paid a pro. I get it, $4 versus $150 sounds like a no brainer, but what if it breaks a pipe or makes things worse? On the other hand, some people say a $30 auger from Home Depot is the smart middle ground. So is the Dollar Tree snake a genius hack or a ticking time bomb?
Tbh that plumber just wants your $150. A four dollar snake that pulls out a hair ball and fixes the drain is a win, not a bomb. Just don't jam it too hard and you're fine.
