Just realized I was salting my pasta water wrong for 10 years

Was watching a cooking video last Tuesday and the guy said to salt it until it tastes like the sea. I always just threw in a pinch and wondered why my sauce needed so much salt. Has anyone else been undersalting their pasta water and then overcompensating with sauce?
