Can we talk about how I used to fix drywall cracks with toothpaste and now I own a 6 inch taping knife?

Back in my rental on 118 Ave I patched every nail pop and crack with whatever was within arm's reach (toothpaste, spackle, a dab of caulk, didn't matter) and just painted right over it, and of course every patch came back within a month or two. Now I'm doing my own basement in Mill Woods and I actually cut the crack into a V, mud it three times with drying time in between, and sand it smooth like a real grown up. Anyone else make the jump from landlord special fixes to doing it right, or am I the only one who took this long to buy a proper knife and pan?
