Paid $400 for a heated driveway cable kit and it did nothing but run up my Epcor bill

I put the kit on my north facing walkway last October thinking I would never shovel again, and after two winters here in Glenora it barely melted 2 cm of snow while my Epcor bill jumped about $90 a month. The cables sat under 3 inches of ice and I still had to chip it out with the same $30 scraper I already owned, so I ended up ripping the whole thing out this spring. Is there anyone in Edmonton who actually got one of these to work on our freeze thaw cycles, or is that just Calgary marketing nonsense?
