Switched from spray foam to rockwool for soundproofing my basement suite last month

I used to think spray foam was the only way to go for insulation, but after doing a bedroom in my Edmonton basement suite, the sound transfer between rooms is way better with rockwool. Cost me about $400 more for the materials though. Anyone else tried this for interior walls?

Gently point out that rockwool is actually NOT for soundproofing outer walls if it's not the right type. The Safe n Sound stuff is great for interior walls but you still want something like Comfortbatt for exterior walls if you're dealing with cold like we get here in Alberta. Regular rockwool batts for outer walls work fine but make sure you're using the right density for your climate zone.

Oh man, I did the exact same thing in my place last year. I was really nervous about spending the extra cash but honestly the difference is night and day. I can actually watch movies in the living room now without my wife complaining about hearing it in the bedroom. I used the Safe n Sound stuff for the interior walls and regular rockwool for the outer walls. The installation was way nicer too, no itchy spray foam fumes or waiting for it to cure. Only thing I'd mention is you gotta be careful cutting it to fit around outlets and stuff, a utility knife with a fresh blade helps a ton.
