Talked to a plumber about PEX vs copper and it changed my whole approach
Had a chat with my buddy Mike over at Edmonton Plumbing Supply on 99 Street last weekend. He told me that for our freeze-thaw cycle here, PEX is actually way more forgiving than copper because it can expand a bit without bursting. At like $0.50 a foot for PEX versus $3 for copper, I'm rethinking my whole basement rough-in. Anyone else switch materials based on what the pros say?

Mike told me PEX handles tree root pressure way better than copper ever does.

My neighbor spent last winter dealing with a burst copper line in his crawlspace, cost him like $1,200 in drywall repairs alone. That little example made me think about how we get stuck on what's "traditional" just because that's what we've always done. In my experience, the experts who sell both options everyday are usually the ones worth listening to, they see what fails and what doesn't. Seems like a pretty solid rule for more than just plumbing honestly, whether it's tools or cars or whatever else.
