Threw $600 at a heated driveway system last fall and now I'm kicking myself

It melted the snow just fine but the electric bill spiked like crazy over those two cold snaps in January. Anyone else try those and find a way to make them not suck the power dry?

Fiona's right, you gotta be strategic with those things. Running them 24/7 during a cold snap is like leaving every faucet running just in case you might want a drink later. Set a timer so it kicks on a couple hours before the storm hits, not all week long.

Oh yeah, those heated driveways are basically giant electric blankets for concrete! Pretty sure they're not really meant to run full blast during a cold snap, you might save some cash by turning it on just before a storm hits instead of keeping it on all the time.
