Used to rip out old drywall first, now I patch in place

Old me would demo everything to studs on every bathroom Reno. Took forever and made a huge mess. Now I cut out only the damaged sections and feather in new compound. Saves me about 8 hours on a small job. Anyone else switched to less demolition?

Wait, are you seriously saying you just mud over old drywall instead of tearing it out? That's like putting makeup on a broken arm lol. I've seen too many patches bubble up or crack later because you're hiding rot or mold instead of fixing it.

@brookethomas mudding can work fine if the drywall's solid and you use good compound, no rot to worry about.
