Bought a $200 'smart' circuit tracer that couldn't find a wire in a 10-foot wall

It gave a false positive on a cold water pipe instead. What's a tracer you actually trust for old work?

What settings work for your Greenlee, @wendy_garcia16?

Oh man, the same thing happened to me with a fancy tracer I bought last year! I finally switched to an old Klein model from eBay and it works way better, you just gotta turn the sensitivity down until it only picks up the live wire.

Maybe it's just me but that sounds like a settings issue, not the tool itself. My old Greenlee has been solid for years in plaster and lath walls. You really have to get the gain dialed in right or it'll pick up anything metal. A pipe would definitely trick it if the sensitivity was cranked too high.
