Got called out to a house near Austin where the homeowner had wired his own hot tub with lamp cord

The 12 gauge lamp cord was melted into the breaker but he insisted it "ran fine for a month." After that job, I started carrying a roll of actual SOOW cord in my truck just to show people the difference.

Man, that's a classic right there. Lamp cord for a hot tub, I can't even. I mean, you gotta wonder what goes through someone's head, you know? They see the wire is copper and think "good enough" without realizing the insulation is rated for like 15 watts max, not 50 amps of wet, hot, splashing power. It's scary how many people don't get that the wire's jacket is just as important as the metal inside, especially with water and vibration involved. I bet that guy's still out there telling everyone his way worked fine, too.
