Got called to a house in Wichita last month for flickering lights, found a buried junction box in the backyard
The homeowner said they had new landscaping done a few years ago and never thought about it. I dug up this old box full of water and corrosion with bare splices just sitting in the mud. Has anyone else dealt with homeowners covering up outdoor boxes without thinking?

Honestly though, a buried junction box isn't always a death trap if it was actually done right. I've seen plenty of outdoor rated boxes with sealed connections that stayed dry for years underground. The problem here sounds more like the homeowner just didn't know what they had and maybe the landscapers didn't do anything special to protect it. If the splices were properly made with waterproof connectors and the box was rated for direct burial with a good seal, that mud wouldn't have gotten in there. A lot of the panic around buried boxes comes from people seeing hack jobs like this one, but there are legit ways to put stuff underground that work fine for decades.
