Just realized I was using the wrong wire nuts for years until a master electrician called me out on it

Buddy of mine did the same thing with wire nuts on a ceiling fan install. Used the little red ones for everything because they were handy. Fan wobbled and flickered for two years before he hired a guy to fix it. The electrician said the whole junction box was a mess with undersized connectors that kept slipping. One of those jobs where you think you saved time, but really just made it worse.

...and honestly that's how half the shit in my house gets done. People grab whatever's closest or cheapest and just assume it's fine because the wires stay together for a minute. It reminds me of how everyone uses the same cheap phone charger for years until it starts a fire, or how people buy one size of trash bag for every can in their house. We get lazy with the little things because they seem simple, but those are usually the things that cause the biggest headaches later. The real trick to not looking stupid is knowing that "close enough" is almost always a trap, especially with anything that carries power or weight.
