PSA: My 20-year-old Fluke meter finally gave up the ghost during a panel upgrade this morning.

The display just went blank mid-voltage check, so I had to run to the supply house for a loaner and now I'm looking at a $300 replacement, but has anyone had luck fixing the older 70-series models themselves?

What's the deal with good tools dying right when you need them most?

Honestly, that's a pretty good run for a tool. Most stuff these days is junk by year five.

Pop the case open and check the ribbon cable that connects the display, @avery629. I've fixed two 70-series meters that way, the little connector just works loose over time from all the banging around. Also look for any burnt resistors near the input jacks, a 10 cent part swap can save you $300 easy. The solder joints on the battery terminals crack too after twenty years, a quick reflow with an iron brings em back to life. That's usually what kills mine, not the actual meter guts.
